Hope
Hope was commissioned by Voices for Life to open the Bath Festival 2025 in Bath Abbey. Originally for Solo Child, Children's Choir, SATB choir, Piano, and Brass and Rhythm Section, this is a cut back and shortened version written for single line children's choir and soloist. If you would like the SATB version, please take a look at my free SATB choir sheet music
Look Up
Look Up opens Music Of The Spheres, a song cycle for children's choir and piano by Jools Scott and Sue Curtis. With eyes turned skyward, it invites young singers to discover the wonder of the night – the stillness, the darkness, and the glimmering promise of stars. "Look up above your head… in that black sky, can you see light?"

The Monk's Song
The Monk's Song is from Written on Water, a song cycle commissioned by Bath Abbey to celebrate their Footprint Project. It tells the tale of the monks of Bath Abbey during a colourful period of medieval history – with tongue firmly in cheek. Not for the easily offended! Listen out for a cheeky nod to a famous hymn tune at the end.
A Decade of Writing for Young Voices
My journey writing for children’s voices began with The Cool Web in 2014 — an oratorio commemorating the fallen of World War One, based on the war poems of Robert Graves. The piece premiered at Bath Abbey with the Melody Makers, Shean Bowers’ wonderful young singers who brought such magic to the children’s sections. Shean commissioned several works from me during those years, and the experience of hearing children’s voices fill the Abbey’s ancient stones planted a seed.
Singing has been central to my life since I was a boy — first as a chorister at Bath Abbey, then at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Those years taught me what young voices can do: not just the sound, but the discipline, the community, the confidence it builds. I wanted to give something of that back.
When the pandemic struck in 2020, my collaborator Sue Curtis and I found a new purpose: writing music for Voices For Life, a charity founded that year to support children’s wellbeing through singing. What began as a response to isolation became a sustained collaboration that continues today.
Voices For Life
Voices For Life is a registered charity (No. 1191491) founded by Tessa Armstrong in 2020. Their mission is beautifully simple: to inspire children to be happy and confident through the power of singing. The charity delivers workshops in schools across Bath and Wiltshire, combining music education with emotional wellbeing coaching.
Together with Sue Curtis, I’ve written several large-scale works for Voices For Life, including Stardust (2021) — a 45-minute musical journey through space that explores different emotions — and Extraordinary! (2022), a song cycle celebrating children’s uniqueness. These works culminate in performances at venues including Bath Abbey, Wells Cathedral, and St George’s Bristol, where hundreds of children come together to perform with professional musicians.
I’ll be adding a wealth of music from these collaborations to this free collection, so that more children around the world can enjoy singing these pieces.
